| Author Description | Born to Polish parents in 1857, Joseph Conrad was brought up by his uncle after his father’s death in 1969. After learning classics and German, at the age of 16, he started working in French ships based in Marseilles. On one occasion, troubled by lack of money, he attempted suicide. In 1878 he began to work in British ships, after which he learned English and became a British citizen in 1886. His first major work, Almayer’s Folly was published in 1895. In that year, after 20 years of life at sea, he settled down in London to devote himself to writing. His extensive output includes The Nigger of Narcissus(1897), Lord Jim(1900), Heart of Darkness and The End of the Tether(1902), Typhoon(1903), Nostromo(1904), The Secret Agent(1907), Under Western Eyes(1911), Chance(1913) and Shadow-Line(1917). |
