DECIPHERING THE SIGNS OF GOD
The Qur’an constantly exhorts people to “look at the signs of god”, signs that are hidden “in the horizons and in themselves”. In this book, Professor Schimmel attempts to understand the mysteries of Islam using a phenomenological method, developed by Friedrich Heiler to draw closer to the true centre of Islamic belief. Beginning with the simplest “signs of god”, such as stones, plants and animals (and their survival in the religious and symbolic language), she moves on to less obvious signs, such as sacred time and space, ritual actions, forms of worship, the sacred individual, the order of the community, and finally to the human being’s response to the mystery of the Divine. Based on sources in the original languages (Arabic, Persian, Turkish, Urdu and Sindhi) and the author’s personal experience, this book is a survey of Islamic customs and beliefs, as well as an attempt to show the place of the Islamic religion in the religious universe.

ISLAM AND THE PRAYER ECONOMY
At a time when so-called fundamentalism has become the privileged analytical frame for understanding Muslim societies past and present, this study offers another way of looking at Islam. In an innovative combination of anthropology, history, and social theory, Benjamin Soares explores Islam and Muslim practice in an important Islamic religious centre in West Africa from the late nineteenth century to the present.
Drawing on extensive ethnography, archival research, and written sources, he provides a richly detailed discussion of Muslim religious practice—Sufism, Islamic reform, and other contemporary ways of being Muslim in western Mali and more broadly in the country.
This book provides a major contribution to the study of Islam in Africa and will be welcomed by scholars and students in history, religion, and the social sciences, particularly those interested in anthropology, Islam, colonialism and the public sphere.

ISLAMIC POLITICAL RADICALISM
Islamic political radicalism in Europe has seen dramatic growth in recent times. This book offers a sociological, anthropological, psychological and political science analysis of the causes and consequences of this phenomenon. Authors explore the motivations behind such radicalism, focusing on an array of different factors. These include economic and social alienation, political and cultural marginalisation, gender and masculinity, and psychological issues, both at an individual and community level. Other issues discussed are the state responses, national and international, to the ‘War on Terror’ which came about after the attacks on America in September 2001; and the role of Islamic political organisations and their impact on changing ethno-religious identities. This is considered particularly in relation to concept of the Ummah and its influence on the position of Islam and Muslims in places such as Iraq, Afghanistan, and Palestine, as well as Bosnia, Chechnya, and Kashmir. The authors provide an analysis of events and experiences in different European nation states, with a detailed focus on Britain.
This book is particularly relevant in the current climate as an attempt to understand the factors that shape Islamic political radicalism in Europe. Key Features: *Written for academics as well as activists and practitioners *Explores major new and emerging issues, particularly in the aftermath of the July 2005 London bombings
