ISLAMIC JERUSALEM AND ITS CHRISTIA
Islamic Jerusalem has a special place in the hearts of the three monotheistic religions. Throughout its history it has been the site of tolerance and tensions. “Islamic Jerusalem and its Christians” presents a critical look at historical events during the time of two key figures in the history of Islam: firstly Caliph ‘Umar Ibn Al-Khattab, who played a critically important role in the birth and spread of Islam. Secondly Sultan Salah al-Din, the legendary ‘Saladdin’ of Western Crusader lore, whose peace negotiations with Richard the Lion-Heart, King of England Abu Munshar brings to life here. This pioneering study uses extensive original research to explore Muslim treatment of non-Muslims in the 7th Century and in the middle Ages. A valuable source of reference for all interested in Islamic and Middle Eastern studies, Religion and Medieval History, “Islamic Jerusalem and its Christians” establishes and develops new evidence for academic debate.

ISLAM AND POLITICAL VIOLENCE
Acts of violence by extremist groups and the war on terror have added fresh uncertainties to an already complex global order and heightened a widely felt sense of insecurity in the West and the Muslim world. Just as terrorist and counter-terrorism are locked in a mutually re-enforcing symbiosis, the sense of insecurity felt by Muslims (living in Muslim majority and minority states) and non-Muslims is mutually dependent and has the potential to escalate. The pervasive sense of being under attack by the United States and its Western allies has contributed to a growing unease among Muslims and re-enforced deep-seated mistrust of the ‘West’. Public articulation of such misgivings has in turn, lent credence to Western observers, like Samuel Huntington, who posit an inherent antipathy between the West and the Muslim world. The subsequent policies that have emerged in this context of fear and mutual distrust have contributed to xenophobia and a vicious cycle of insecurity.” Islam and Political Violence” seeks to redress the current debate on the uneasy and potentially mutually destructive relationship between the Muslim world and the West. Akbarzadeh and Mansouri bring together some of the top international scholars in the field, including James Piscatorial and Amin Saikal, to deal with a set of inter-related questions about the nature of Islamism, impact of the ‘war on terror’ on the spread of militancy and the unintended security ramifications.” Islam and Political Violence” explores the modern concept of Islamism and the re-invention of Islam by the political elites and counter-elites to advance temporal objectives. Islamism rests on a combination of domestic and international factors. The Taliban, Hizb ut-Tahrir in Indonesia and Laskar-e Toiba are pertinent case studies of this domestic-international cross-section. “Islam and Political Violence” provides us with a new angle from which to examine the range of challenges to social cohesion and multiculturalism in Western societies and the future of Islam in the West.

THE NEW CENTRAL ASIA
In this new edition of his acclaimed book, Olivier Roy examines the political development of Central Asia, from the Russian conquests to the ‘War on Terror’ and beyond. During the anti-Gorbachev coup in August 1991, most communist leaders from Soviet Central Asia backed the plotters. Within weeks of the coup’s collapse, these very same leaders – now transformed into ardent nationalists – proclaimed the independence of their nations, designed new flags, invented new slogans and discovered a new patriotism. How were these new nations built, without any traditional nationalist reference points? In “The New Central Asia”, Olivier Roy argues that Soviet practice had always been to build on local institutions and promote local elite. Thus Soviet administration – as opposed to Soviet policy making – was always surprisingly decentralized. With home-grown political leaders and administrative institutions, national identities in Central Asia emerged almost by stealth. Roy’s compelling analysis of the new Central Asian states – Kazakhstan, Turkmenistan, Uzbekistan, Tajikistan, Kirghizstan and including Azerbaijan – makes an invaluable contribution to our understanding of the geopolitics of Central Asia.

INSIDE HAMAS
What is the real nature of Hamas? Since their astonishing victory in the 2006 Palestinian elections, this has become the most hotly-contested question in the Middle East. How do they really operate? How ‘Islamic’ are they? What personalities lie beneath the black-and-green uniforms? In this explosive book, Palestinian-born journalist, Zaki Chehab draws on his unique insider sources to tell the story of this radical movement as it has never been told before. He shows how Hamas developed with the implicit encouragement of the Israelis (they bought their first weapons cache from the Shin Bet, Israel’s domestic security agency), who wanted to weaken Fatah. He uncovers the extent of the Israeli intelligence services’ penetration of the organisation, even at the highest levels. Interviewing key figures, he offers completely new insights in to Hamas. He reveals for the first time how they prepare their ‘martyrs’ for suicide bombing attacks. He investigates their relationship with other groups, such as Hezbollah and Al Qaeda. The picture which emerges is of a political leadership driven above all else by a desire for power.
This authoritative book is essential reading for anyone who cares about the Israeli-Palestinian conflict and the future of the Middle East.

KASHMIR IN CONFLICT
Why is the valley of Kashmir, famed for its beauty and tranquillity, regarded by many political and military analysts as the most likely catalyst for unclear conflict in the 21st century? Why does the Kashmir separatist movement challenge the integrity of the Indian state and stability of Pakistan and pose a threat to a region of great strategic importance? Victoria Schofield’s updated revision of the highly acclaimed Kashmir in the crossfire examines the Kashmir conflict, from the period when the valley was an ancient independent kingdom to the most recent flare-up. Located on the borders of china, central Asia and the subcontinent, the state of Jammu and Kashmir in 1999 once again confirmed its status as a battle-ground for India and Pakistan, the worlds latest and most confrontational unclear powers.
