AHMAD RIZA KHAN BARELWI
ABMAD RIZA KHAN (1856—1921), the leader of the twentieth-century Barelwi movement, was a scholar of Islamic law and a Sufi mystic in British India. His vision of what it meant to be a good Muslim was built on devotion to the Prophet Muhammad and to following the prophetic sunna as he interpreted it. The Barelwi movement continues to attract a large following both in South Asia and wherever South Asian Muslims have migrated, particularly in Britain.
This book examines the life and thought of Ahmad Riza Khan in the context of late nineteenth and early twentieth-century British Indian history, and assesses his impact on contemporary reformist Muslim movements. Accessible yet authoritative, it features a glossary, chronology and guide to further reading, and will prove an indispensable resource for readers of all backgrounds.

MAKERS OF THE MUSLIM WORLD: IBN ‘ARABI
MUHYI AD-DIN IBN ‘Arabi (1165—1240) was an outstanding Spanish-born mystic and one of the most prolific writers in Islamic history. He made major contributions to the fields of Qur’an commentary, jurisprudence, theology, philosophy, cosmology, and spiritual psychology, and he was also a great poet of love. Although he is known as the first spokesman for ‘the oneness of being,’ his real focus was the diverse modalities of human perfection. He marks a transition in Sufism from practical instructions on healing the heart and aphorisms on the divine mysteries to an equal stress on the theoretical issues that had long been the topic of philosophy and theology.
This book by a leading expert covers Ibn ‘Arabi’s life and teachings. Accessible yet authoritative, it also includes a guide to further reading, and will prove an indispensable resource for readers of all backgrounds.

SPEAKING IN GOD’S NAME
Drawing on both religious and secular sources, this challenging book argues that divinely ordained law is frequently misinterpreted by Muslim authorities at the expense of certain groups, including women. Khaled Abou El Fadl cites a series of injustices in Islamic society and ultimately proposes a return to the original ethics at the heart of the Muslim legal system.

A SATIRICAL REIMAGINING OF MARY SHELLEY’S FRANKENSTEIN
From the rubble-strewn streets of US-occupied Baghdad, Hadi collects body parts from the dead, which he stitches together to form a corpse.
He claims he does it to force the government to recognise the parts as real people, and give them a proper burial.
But when the corpse goes missing, a wave of eerie murders sweeps across the city, and reports stream in of a horrendous-looking, flesh-eating monster that cannot be killed. At first it’s the guilty he attacks, but soon it’s anyone who crosses his path…
Frankenstein in Baghdad brilliantly captures the horror and black humour of a city at war.

BELIEVING AN HISTORICAL PERSPECTIVE
Today the concept of “believing” is generally considered to be of central significance to one’s faith. Smith traces the history of “believing” through a discussion of religious belief from a modern philosophical and linguistic perspective; an assessment of the history of the words “belief” and “believe”; as well as through the study of biblical passages. Smith’s comprehensive enquiry reveals that this emphasis on its importance is a relatively modern phenomenon.
